Alchemist Presents: Healthy Corner store Make-over Launch

Sacramento is a fresh food hub in the middle of farms and farmers markets, a wonderland for foodies, a dynamic market for specialty crops, an enthusiastic home of farm-to-fork and farm-toschool programs and all kinds of deliciousness, but in the midst of all this abundance, we still have "food deserts" where fresh and healthy food is hard to find. We still have families that struggle to find and afford healthy food, who suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure, and other physical and mental effects of poor nutrition. There are nearly 220,000 food insecure residents living in Sacramento County, mostly in low-income neighborhoods. One in five of those food insecure people are currently employed but still can’t afford adequate food.

Bucking this unfortunate trend, Sam’s Market at 4143 23rd Ave. (at 42nd St.) already carries more healthy items than most convenience stores. But as of May 26th, the store will go a step further and celebrate the launch of their healthy corner store make-over, as they stock their shelves with fresh, local produce sourced from local farmers. Owner Parminder Grewal has welcomed collaboration with Alchemist CDC on this project, seeing that it will benefit his store as well as the community.
