Fresno BHC Community

Central, southeast and southwest Fresno (see map) is the historical core residential community in the City of Fresno which is home to a diverse population ranging from long-time residents to recent immigrants. Wave after wave of immigrants has settled here, including a large Hmong, Cambodian and Lao refugee community. More than 100 languages are spoken in Fresno City and no greater diversity exists in the area than in Central/Southeast/Southwest Fresno. Both the agricultural and manufacturing industries are the primary drivers of the local economy.

With a population exceeding 70,000, central, southeast, and southwest Fresno has its share of challenges including high levels of poverty, unemployment, gang violence, and obesity and asthma prevalence rates that exceed statewide averages.

However, in recent years, a growing cadre of organizations and individuals skilled in statewide policy work has emerged and is working on local, regional and statewide levels on issues, including environmental justice, the built environment, obesity and asthma, as well as a variety of other health issues. Furthermore,
central, southeast, and southwest Fresno possesses strong school-linked youth and family services, including neighborhood resource centers, after school programs and co-location of prevention services on school campuses.

The California Endowment, one of few long-time funders in the Central Valley, has a rich history of grant making in the region. With
central, southeast, and southwest Fresno's engaged leadership and a variety of local service providers, The Endowment sees a viable opportunity for transforming the neighborhoods of the area into healthy communities.
