Weingart East Los Angeles YMCA Launches YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program

White Memorial Medical Center, Keck Medical Center of USC and the

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Team Up to Help the Y Educate the Community

WHAT:  On Thursday, November 21, 2013, Weingart East Los Angeles YMCA will launch the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program.  As a leading voice committed to improving the nation’s health and well-being, the Y is encouraging the largely immigrant Latino community of Boyle Heights/East Los Angeles to learn their risks for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes and steps they can take to prevent the disease.

A 12-month journey, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program includes 16 weekly sessions followed by monthly maintenance gatherings facilitated by trained Y Lifestyle Coaches.  In a small classroom setting, participants will learn how healthy eating, increased physical activity and behavioral changes benefit their overall health.

“We are grateful that our generous sponsors have enabled Weingart East Los Angeles YMCA to further educate our community about staying healthy and preventing diabetes,” says Victor Dominguez, YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles’ Senior Vice President of Operations and Community Development.   “Hispanics and Latinos are at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, as 11.8 percent of people ages 20 years or older have already been diagnosed with the disease.  We are confident that the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program will help meet the needs of this underserved community.”
