SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Proposition 36 Urgent Request

Hi all,

Please see the request below from Peggy Edwards of LARRP. As a partner with LARRP, we're supporting their efforts. Please contact Peggy Edwards at info@lareentry.org if you have any questions or would like to respond to the request.

Dear Partners,

We are writing with an urgent request to you as a service provider serving people reentering their communities from incarceration. As many of you are aware, Proposition 36, which voters overwhelmingly passed last November, did not authorize any funding for housing or supportive services for these people sentenced under the three strike law with a non-serious crime as the third strike.

Between 1,000 – 1,2000 people are potentially eligible for release to Los Angeles County. The first 50 people have been released and we are scrambling to receive another 100 or so that could be eligible for release if they had a reentry plan, including housing. Their Public Defenders are desperate to find services and we are trying to help.

We are asking if you have space in your program that could be used by one of these reentering former three strikers. And, yes, we are asking for free services.

Be assured that at the same time we are asking you for free services, we are also asking the County of Los Angeles to do the right thing and cover these Proposition 36 people under the funding allocated by the state for AB 109 – Realignment.  We hope to have the funding situation resolved before the bulk of the Proposition 36 people are ready to be released but we have IMMEDIATE needs now.

If you can help, please send an email to info@lareentry.orgindicating the type of services you can provide and the number of people you would consider taking. Several agencies are already helping or have committed to help. Can you join these colleagues?

Please contact me via info@lareentry.org with any questions or comments and to offer any support in our advocacy effort to secure public funding for Proposition 36 implementation in Los Angeles County.

Best,
Peggy Edwards
